MFL confirms Liga Super restructuring — what changes for clubs

Malaysian Football League has confirmed the restructuring that clubs have been briefed on privately since March. The headline is a smaller top flight. The substance is in the licensing calendar and the distribution model, neither of which made the press release.

The three changes that matter

A shorter licensing window. Clubs will need to satisfy financial criteria earlier in the calendar. For well-run clubs this is administrative. For clubs that have historically closed the gap between criteria and reality in the final weeks, it is not.

Centralised distribution. A larger share of commercial revenue is pooled and distributed against a performance-and-participation formula rather than negotiated individually. The clubs in the middle of the table gain most.

Squad registration limits. Fewer registered players, with a floor on locally-developed ones. The stated aim is youth pathways. The practical effect is a tighter market in the second half of the window.

Who this helps

Mid-table clubs with functioning academies and stable ownership. They get a larger and more predictable share of central money, and the registration floor gives their youth players a route to minutes that the market had been closing.

Who this squeezes

Clubs running large squads on short contracts. That model has been under pressure for several seasons and this accelerates it. At least two current top flight sides will need to restructure their wage bill to be compliant by the new deadline.

The restructuring takes effect for the 2027 season. Clubs have until the end of the current campaign to submit revised plans.
